I have always been deeply connected to and fascinated by the natural world. My art work explores what it is to be part of nature and to experience and nurture our connection to the natural world, especially to our sense of place.

I work with quilts and explore the natural world through nature journals. I have chosen quilts as a medium because they have traditionally been part of community. Quilts, by their very structure, are about connections and patterns. Many times a quilt is created out of many pieces, sewn together to create patterns and relationships between the pieces. The quilting stitch both literally and symbolically connects all of the elements of the quilt together. Quilts have also historically and symbolically been about communities coming together to celebrate and remember. People make quilts in celebration of relationships (for births, marriage, and memorials, for example) and many times even work together to create quilts.

Nature quilts also celebrate community and connection, but instead of concerning just the human community, they acknowledge that we are also part of the larger community of the natural world. I hope that my artwork inspires people to slow down for a moment, to really look at the world, to touch beauty with their hearts and souls. This can be a starting point for reflection on the ways - both positive and negative - humans interact with the natural community. With reflection, people can make conscious choices about what they, both as individuals and as members of a species, want that relationship to be.
