Plankton are the base of the marine food chain. Phytoplankton, or plant plankton, create sugars through the process of photosynthesis. Zooplankton, or animal plankton, then feed on phytoplankton and other zooplankton. A large variety of fish and marine invertebrates depend on plankton for food. Phytoplankton are also responsible for producing 50 to 80 percent of the world’s oxygen. What defines a plankton as a plankton is that it can’t swim strong enough to escape the water’s current, and therefore drifts where the water takes it.
