Luna Moth

© 2002. Hand embroidered luna moth, machine pieced, hand quilted and beaded. 14 x 15.5 inches.

I created this piece after I had the opportunity to watch several Luna moths emerge from their cocoons during the time I worked at a nature center. When the first one started to emerge, I heard a scratching sound. I went to look and saw the luna slowly breaking it’s way out of the cocoon. I sat and watched for a long time unitl it crawled out, crumbled and wet looking. It crawled to the top of the cage and slowly pumped it’s wings out and let them harden. The hand-embroidered Luna moth is approximately life sized.
